Introduction to Mussoorie

Mussoorie is a famous hill station in the cusp of the foothills of the Garhwal Himalayan range of Uttarakhand. This hill station is one of the most loved weekend destination for people in Delhi NCR. 1. Kempty Falls

People visit the pond at the bottom of the falls for swimming and bathing. The ropeway is the best way to reach the pond at the bottom and explore waterfalls.

John Mekinan developed it as a picnic destination due to its scenic beauty and waterfalls. Water stream cascades down from the height and divides into two main falls. Camp and tea are the two terms that form the name Kempty Falls as tea parties used to be organized here in the evenings.

2. Mussoorie Mall Road

3. Lal Tibba

4. Gun Hill

10. Nag Tibba Trek

16. Jabarkhet Nature Reserve

Jabarkhet Nature Reserve is a nature park over 100 acres of land on the Mussoorie Dhanaulti road at an elevation of 2000 meters. It was the first privately operated and owned wildlife sanctuary in Uttarakhand.

Different altitudinal zones are home to various rare mammals, birds, trees, animals, reptiles, insects, and plants. It is an ideal getaway in stunning natural beauty with eight well-demarcated trails for a walk in the wilderness.

17. George Everest House

George Everest’s house is perched on top of a cliff and exudes a sense of nostalgia and serenity. It was built in 1832 at Park Estate 6 kilometers west of Gandhi Chowk in Mussoorie. History buffs and adventure travelers come to explore the old world charm.

George Everest served as the Surveyor General of India from 1830-1843. He was a British Surveyor and geographer. Sir Everest objected to the honor of naming the highest peak after him because he had nothing to do with discovering the mountain.

Sir spent 11 years in this mountain house and used it as his observatory and laboratory. It is likely to be converted into a museum soon. It is now in a dilapidated state with walls, roof, doors, fireplace, and windows.

18. Soham Heritage & Art Centre

Soham Heritage Centre is a private enterprise that preserves the rich Himalayan heritage. It showcases the cultural diversity of the Himalayas through artifacts, frescoes, scrap art, murals, and paintings.

It was an initiative by Mr. Sameer Shukla and his wife, Dr. Kavita Shukla, to exhibit the Himalayas’ diversity through art forms. It was established in January 2014 after 18 years of tireless inspiration, planning, dedication, and data collection.

19. Benog Wildlife Sanctuary

Benog Wildlife Sanctuary is part of the Rajaji National Park. It is renowned for its mountain quails, red-billed blue magpie, leopards, rare species of birds, and deer. Vinog Mountain Quail Sanctuary is another name of this site.

You can take a refreshing walk on the pine-clad slopes of the trail. Bird watching and views of Bandarpunch and Chaukhamba peaks are other attractions. Fir, pine trees, and some medicinal plants add value to the sanctuary.

20. Mussoorie Christ Church

It was the first Catholic Church in the Himalayan territory. The Church was built in 1836 in Gothic architecture. Flying buttresses, pointed arches, and ribbed vaults show the gothic style of architecture.

Colonial charm and old-world feels come alive in the complex. In 1906, the Princess of Wales planted the deodar tree in the courtyard. European architecture, interior walls, and a sacred spiritual environment are the major highlights of the Church.

22. Shedup Choepelling Temple

Shedup Choepelling is a small Buddhist temple with a huge idol of Buddha on the edifice’s top. It is close to IAS Academy and Company Garden on the highest cliff of the Valley. Snow-capped mountains, blooming flowers, mesmerizing views of the Valley are the main highlights of the temple.

It is the first Tibetan shrine that was built in India and consecrated by Dalai Lama. Dalai Lama got refuge at Happy Valley of Mussoorie in 1959. It is popularly known as the Tibetan Buddhist Temple.

23. Lambi Dehar Mines

Lambi Dehar Mines is the eeriest and spooky tourist attraction in Uttarakhand. It is a couple of kilometers ahead of Mussoorie. It is notorious as “Mine of Death” because a witch haunts these mines.

The mine was operational till the early 1990s. After the death of 50000 people, it was shut down.

As such inappropriate mining practices caused lung disorder and deaths of the people. Locals believe that an evil spirit haunts the place, and they report sinister behavior, blood-curdling wails, and paranormal activities.

The site witnessed several road accidents and a helicopter crash. This attraction is not meant for the faint-hearted. Avoid venturing out after dark in search of adventure.
